Over the last two years, the Huber Arts Fund donated four digital SLR cameras to Dr. Robin Johnson’s Greencastle High School art classes. The cameras have seen plenty of use during that time. Because of the popularity of Dr. Johnson’s photo class and the high quality of her students’ work, our board decided to initiate a photo competition for GHS students this spring.
The Fund worked closely with Dr. Johnson to organize the contest and all GHS photography students were invited to participate. We were also pleased to partner with this year’s judge, Alexandra Chamberlain, Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Depauw University’s Peeler Art Center and a 2013 Depauw graduate.
To be eligible for display and prizes, students were expected to submit a digital and print copy of their photo as well as a short artist statement and entry form by April 9. Prizes included $100 cash prize for third, a $300 cash prize for second, and a Canon EOS Rebel T6 Digital SLR Camera Kit for first place. From the 23 submittals, Ms. Chamberlain juried in 10 for exhibit, then selected the top three prize-winners.
On April 25, board members Linda Huber and Jessie Scott were joined by Ms. Chamberlain and GHS Principal Russ Hessler to announce the top 10 photos during Dr. Johnson’s class and explain the judging process. Prizes were also given for the top three photos:
- 1st place – Photographer Taylor Cash
- 2nd place – Take a Moment by Rose White
- 3rd place – Conversational Friendship by Cole Whetsel

A formal awards presentation will take place on May 18 during the Greencastle High School annual awards convocation and the top 10 photos will also be on display at McAnally Center. Fund Director Linda Huber will be on hand to present awards to the top three winners.
To see the top three photos in person, visit the Greencastle Starbucks, 2 E. Washington Street, through May 16. The top 10 photos will then be exhibited at the Peeler Art Center on Depauw University campus, 10 W. Hanna Street. Admission to the Peeler is free and open to the public. Check our Facebook page for updates on show dates.
Congratulations to our first-ever photo contest winners and thank you to all of our participating students. We are so pleased with their response to the competition and look forward to our next GHS arts and music partnership.
We also want to give a warm thanks to Dr. Johnson, Ms. Chamberlain, and Principal Hessler. Working with Dr. Johnson and Ms. Chamberlain on the competition has been a wonderful experience. Dr. Johnson puts her heart and soul into her classes and students. Being able to help provide things they need for their classes is so exciting for all of us. Because of you, our donors, we can make that happen!
